Ry Wilkin is a self-taught artist who works with a range of mediums. He was born in Adelaide, South Australia (SA) in 1983, and grew up in rural SA. Before pursuing his art career, Ry worked as a carpenter, which required working with a range of domestic and industrial building materials. The skills developed from this trade have carried over to his art practice. In addition to wood and metal work, Ry’s hybrid art practice incorporates stenciling, digital painting and 2D animation. In 2006 Ry co-founded design label are/why?, a creative space for a range of artists across Australia to collaborate in fashion, design, music and animation. Highlights for are/why? include animation projection at Fuse Festival and This Is Not Art festival, and the nationally-screened video clip for Australian band Sydonia. Ry has exhibited extensively in Newcastle with the ArtHive crew and in 2012 had his first solo show in Melbourne. Ry has since been commissioned by local theatre and music groups for animation projections, digital artwork and short animated clips and is continuing to exhibit whenever possible.
Ry Wilkin can interpretive dance his way through almost every situation and definitely drinks too much coffee.
